If you’re looking for something smoky, spicy, herby, creamy and bright to amp up your home cooking, this is going to be it!

Putting the Chipotle in Chipotle Lime Crema. 

What you’re going to want to look for is chipotle in adobo sauce. They come in small cans often in the international aisle at the grocery store.

When you pop the lid off that bad boy, your whole kitchen is going to be filled with the sweet, smoky, spicy aromas of the peppers – they’re that strong.

They’re pretty spicy, but they have so much incredible flavour that makes the heat even better; it makes you want to eat more.

The sauce the peppers are packed in is what gives it the smoky flavour; you’ll definitely want to add that into whatever you’re making.

Chipotle Lime Crema – A Balancing Act

When you have an ingredient that has such intense, concentrated flavour, you need to balance it out.

We want something with full fat to bind to the spice and calm it down. I like to use sour cream for its creaminess and tang. You could also use Greek yogurt if you’re looking for a little extra protein.

With spice and fat, you need a little twist of acid to bring it all home.

A little bit of lime is going to add brightness, acidity and flavour that is going to round out the finished crema.

Don’t forget to add some fresh herbs and a pinch of salt!

Add it to everything. 

When I say you can put this on everything, I mean it.

I love it with a lovely steak quesadilla, but why stop there?

Chipotle Lime Crema


  • 250 ml Sour Cream
  • 1 Chipotle Pepper Chopped
  • 1 tbsp Adobo Sauce
  • 1 Garlic Clove Minced
  • 1 tbs Red Onion Diced
  • 1 Lime Juiced and Zested
  • 1/2 cup Basil Chopped
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt


  • Remove 1 large chipotle pepper and finely chop.
  • Into a mixing bowl add 250ml sour cream, 1 chopped chipotle pepper, 1 tbsp of adobo sauce, 1 lime zested and juiced, 1 minced garlic minced, 1/2 cup fresh basil, 1 tbsp chopped red onion and a pinch of kosher salt. Mix well.
