Homemade Berry Crisp Recipe
This is as down home of a dessert as I can make. Insanely easy to make and just an ultimate comfort dessert. Perfect to toss together for a Sunday dinner dessert, or to bring to a potluck. Easy, quick, and a bonafide crowd pleaser.
Crisp or crumble? You choose?
What I love about this dessert is its versatility. You can really take this in a few different directions by subbing out the mixed berries for really any fruit, fresh or frozen. I have made this same recipe using apples, strawberries, and blueberries. I love the mix berries that I used in this recipe as the cherries and blackberries give it a lovely taste!
Ingredients you will need
- Melted Butter- I always get asked whether I use salted or unsalted butter. The reality is I use what ever butter I have on hand, which is usually what is on sale.. Unless I have COWS butter.. that’s my fav. If you are dairy free or wanted to make this vegan, switch to margarine or any butter sub. Easy Peasy.
- Brown Sugar- The lovely flavour of brown sugar is key here. I like that flavour this brings, but if you wanted to reduce go for it!
- Oats- If you have been following the East Coast Kitchen for a while now you know I love oats. It’s key ingredient here.
- Flour- Only need a little bit, and if you want to sub for GF flour, no problem!
- Cinnamon – We are a big cinnamon family and you will see it in most of my baked goods. This recipe is no different.
- Frozen Berries- Use what you got!
- Maple syrup- You could use honey or a bit of sugar to sweeten the berries, but I like the flavour maple brings especially when paired with oats.
- Lemon zest and juice. Lemon brightens up what ever it touches. A little zest and juice makes the berries POP.
Recipe
Homemade Berry Crisp
Ingredients:
Crumble
- 3/4 cup melted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2 cups oats
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 pinch salt
Berry mixture
- 1.5 litre bag Frozen mixed berries around 7-8 cups
- 2 tbs maple syrup
- 3 tbs flour
- zest 1 lemon
- 1/2 Lemon, juiced.
Serve with Vanilla Icecream
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350F and grease a 9X13 inch baking pan.
- Inside the greased baking pan, toss together the berries, maple syrup, flour, lemon zest, and lemon juice.
- In a separate bowl mix together brown sugar, flour, oats, cinnamon, salt, and melted butter. Stir until butter gets well introduced to all of the ingredients. I some times like to squeeze clumps of the mixture together to create clusters.
- Evenly spread the oat mixture over the top of the berries and lightly push down.
- Toss the dish into the oven for 45 minutes. Once done cooking, remove and allow to cool. The crumble will become more crispy as it cools.
- Serve with some vanilla icecream and a sprig of fresh mint.
