Christmas Margarita with Cranberry, Coconut & Lime
There are few things I love more than a cozy Christmas cocktail, especially one that looks as festive as it tastes. Enter this Christmas margarita recipe — a bright, creamy, tangy little number that feels like Christmas in the Caribbean. I started making this cranberry margarita a few years ago with a friend, and it’s become our unofficial holiday tradition. Every holiday season, when we’re prepping for holiday gatherings or decorating the tree, there’s always one of these in hand. It’s tart from the cranberry, smooth from the coconut milk, and just a little zippy from the lime juice. Basically, it’s a festive cocktail that feels tropical but still totally fits the holiday spirit.
And the best part? You don’t need fancy glassware or a professional cocktail shaker to make it. I’ve shaken this in a large pitcher, a mason jar, and once, in a Tupperware container (don’t judge). All you need is a few simple ingredients, a good shake, and a lime wedge for that perfect garnish.
Recipe

Christmas Margarita
Ingredients:
- 1 oz cranberry juice
- 1/2 oz coconut milk (original, not unsweetened)
- 1/2 oz lime juice
- 1 1/4 oz tequila
- 1/2 oz orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier)
- 2 drops coconut extract (optional)
- Sugar, for rim
- 1 lime wedge
- 2-3 cranberries
- Sprig of rosemary
Instructions:
- In a shallow bowl, add sugar for rimming your glass. Brush one side with lime juice or dip it in, then press into the sugar and set aside.
- Fill a shaker tin or mason jar with ice. Add all ingredients, seal, and shake vigorously for 20–25 seconds.
- Fill your prepared glass with fresh ice and strain the margarita over top.
- Garnish with a lime wedge, cranberries, or a sprig of rosemary — or skip the garnish if you’re keeping it simple. Serve immediately.
A Christmas Cocktail with a Twist
I love a classic margarita — tequila, lime juice, and triple sec — but this time of year calls for a little sparkle. This Christmas margarita recipe keeps that base but adds a creamy coconut twist and a hit of tart cranberry. The combination of coconut milk, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice gives it such balanced flavors — sweet, tangy, and rich all at once.
It’s kind of like a white Christmas margarita, but with a rosy hue and a little extra personality. Think cranberry cocktail meets coconut margarita with a side of holiday cheer.
If you’re hosting a Christmas party, it’s the kind of holiday margarita recipe that feels festive without being fussy — no blender, no complicated ratios, and definitely no expensive grocery store ingredients. Just a quick shake and you’re ready to go.

The Ingredients (and Why They Work)
This cranberry margarita is all about balance. Each of the ingredients plays a role, so here’s what’s going on behind the scenes:
- Cranberry juice – Brings tartness and that gorgeous festive color. You can also use white cranberry juice if you want something a little lighter. I prefer pure cranberry juice for this recipe, but feel free to reach for cranberry cocktail if you want extra sweetness.
- Coconut milk – The richness rounds out the acidity, making it creamy and smooth. (Don’t use cream of coconut unless you want it extra sweet!)
- Lime juice – Always fresh limes, always freshly squeezed. It’s the secret to keeping the drink bright.
- Tequila – I usually go for a blanco tequila or silver tequila — clean, crisp, and perfect for mixing.
- Orange liqueur – Whether you use Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier, it adds that little citrus lift every margarita needs.
- Coconut extract – Totally optional, but a few drops really make the coconut flavor pop.
For the garnish, I love adding fresh cranberries, a sprig of rosemary, and a lime slice. It’s like dressing your drink up for a holiday party.

Tips & Tricks for a Perfect Christmas Margarita
1. You Don’t Need Fancy Tools
No cocktail shaker? No problem. Just use a Tupperware, a mason jar, or any sturdy container with a tight lid. Shake it hard — about 20 seconds — to get everything cold and frothy.
2. Sugar Rim for a Festive Touch
Instead of the usual salt rim, I like using a sugar rim. It makes the rim of the glass sparkle and adds a subtle sweetness that balances the tart cranberry and lime flavors.
3. Make a Batch for a Crowd
If you’re serving this at a holiday gathering or festive Christmas party, make it in a large pitcher. Just multiply your ratios, shake or blend everything with ice, and pour when ready.
4. Add a Coconut or Pomegranate Twist
If you want to play around, swap the tequila for coconut rum, or add a splash of pomegranate juice for extra holiday color. It’s an easy way to make this festive twist your own.
5. Garnish Like You Mean It
Even if you’re not into decorating cocktails, a few fresh cranberries, a wedge of lime and a sprig of rosemary make this look (and smell) like the holidays.

Christmas Margarita: Serving & Variations
This is the perfect holiday cocktail to serve before dinner or as part of a dessert spread — it pairs beautifully with citrusy sweets, chocolate, or anything creamy.
If you’re hosting festive gatherings, set out a little margarita glass station with garnishes, extra lime wedges, and rosemary sprigs. Everyone can build their own version, which makes it feel super fun.
And if you want to keep things non-alcoholic, just skip the tequila and orange liqueur, double up on the cranberry and coconut milk, and top with soda water. It’s still creamy, tart, and totally celebratory.

Why I Love This Christmas Margarita
I think every time of year deserves its own signature drink, and this one’s mine for December. The tart cranberry and creamy coconut make me think of a snowy night somewhere warm — which, let’s be honest, is the dream.
It’s got those tropical fruity flavors, that smooth coconut vibe, and that pop of lime that wakes everything up. It’s refreshing, cozy, and just a little bit indulgent — exactly what a holiday cocktail should be.
And every time I make it, it’s a huge hit. Friends text me the next day asking for the recipe or where they can find “that Christmas margarita with the coconut.”
So whether you’re hosting a big holiday party or winding down after wrapping gifts, this drink always hits the right note.

Final Thoughts On This Christmas Margarita
For me, this Christmas cocktail is the kind of recipe that makes the holidays feel special without being stressful. You don’t need bar tools, fancy glassware, or a beach vacation — just a few ingredients and a little holiday spirit.
It’s sweet, tart, creamy, and bright — a festive cocktail that feels just as right at a cozy kitchen counter as it does at a Christmas party. So grab your shaker (or your mason jar), cue up your favorite playlist, and cheers to the holiday season with something that’s equal parts coconut, cranberry, and joy.

I am needing clarification on the kind of coconut milk to use – the canned coconut milk on the grocery shelves one uses for curries (Cha’s etc.) all show as unsweetened on the label or in the ingredient list. Does this recipe call for carton coconut milk like Silks which has “Original” (or “Sweetened”) on the carton label? Thank you.
The canned coconut version is recommended for this one, Mary Anne!
When you say coconut milk (original, not unsweetened), do you mean we’re supposed to use sweetened coconut milk? I would like to make this but I am unclear if it’s sweetened or unsweetened
Exactly! Regular coconut milk for this one, Jacquelyn!
Loved this cocktail so much we have made it twice already! Great twist on a traditional marg. I didn’t have coconut extract or rosemary on hand so didn’t use those, but did add a shake on cinnamon on top for a little warmth and it was really good! Thanks for another great recipe!
Love this, Sonya! So glad this was such a hit!
I need to know if you used coconut milk in a can or the sweetened coconut milk in a box..
You can use either, Barbara! As long as it’s regular (not the unsweetened kind.)
