Tirokafteri (Spicy Greek Feta Dip)
If there’s one Greek dip I could happily eat every single day, it’s this tirokafteri. Creamy, salty, just a little spicy, and bursting with bold Mediterranean flavor, this whipped spicy Greek feta dip is one of my all-time favourite Greek appetizers. Every time I see it on a restaurant menu or as part of a mezze platter, I order it without even thinking twice. The best part? This tirokafteri recipe couldn’t be easier to make at home.
All it takes is a handful of simple ingredients, a food processor, and about 10 minutes. Before you know it, you’ll have a creamy whipped feta dip that’s perfect with warm pita bread, fresh vegetables, pita chips, crusty bread, grilled meats, or tucked into your favourite sandwiches.
I also love serving it beside souvlaki, roasted potatoes, grape leaves, or crispy zucchini fritters. It instantly makes every meal feel like it came straight from a little taverna in Greece.

What Is Tirokafteri?
If you’ve never tried tirokafteri, you’re in for a treat.
The name literally translates to “hot cheese,” which sounds pretty accurate considering it’s made with creamy feta cheese and spicy chilis.
You’ll sometimes also hear it called htipiti, depending on where in Greece you are. Every family seems to have their own version, but the idea is always the same—a creamy spicy feta dip blended with peppers, olive oil, garlic, and a little acid to brighten everything up.
Unlike hummus or tzatziki, this dip has a little kick, making it one of the most memorable dishes on any mezze table.

How Do You Pronounce Tirokafteri?
If the name looks intimidating, don’t worry.
It’s pronounced:
Tee-ro-kahf-teh-REE
Say it a few times and you’ll sound like you’ve been ordering it in Greece for years.

Why I Love This Tirokafteri Recipe
There are plenty of feta dips out there, but tirokafteri is different.
Instead of relying on Greek yogurt or cream cheese, the rich, creamy texture comes almost entirely from the feta cheese itself and extra virgin olive oil.
I always use traditional sheep’s milk feta because it has a tangier taste and much creamier texture than many cow’s milk versions.
The roasted peppers add natural sweetness.
The red wine vinegar brightens everything.
The garlic gives it depth.
And the fresh chili pepper, and chili flakes create just enough heat without overpowering the dip.
Every ingredient has a purpose.

My Tips for Perfect Tirokafteri
Use Good Quality Feta
This is definitely not the recipe for pre-crumbled feta.
Look for a block of good quality feta packed in brine. Traditional sheep’s milk feta gives the richest flavor and creamiest texture.
Let It Come to Room Temperature
Take the feta out of the fridge about 20 minutes before blending.
Room temperature cheese blends much more smoothly and creates an ultra-creamy dip.
Use a Food Processor
A food processor fitted with the blade attachment creates the smoothest consistency.
A blender will also work, but you may need to scrape down the sides a few extra times with a fork or spatula.
Taste Before Adding More Heat
Everyone has a different spice tolerance.
Start with the basic tirokafteri recipe, then taste before adding extra fresh hot peppers or additional red pepper flakes.
It’s much easier to add heat than take it away.

Ingredient Tips
Even though the ingredient list is short, every item plays an important role.
- Feta cheese: The star of the dish.
- Roasted red peppers: Add sweetness and beautiful colour.
- Garlic clove: Just enough sharpness without overpowering everything.
- Extra virgin olive oil: Helps create that silky texture.
- Red wine vinegar: Balances the richness perfectly.
- Fresh chili and chili flakes: Bring the signature spice.
- Fresh parsley: Adds freshness as a simple garnish.
- A tiny pinch of salt usually isn’t necessary because feta is naturally salty.

How I Like to Serve It
Honestly?
I could eat this dip with a spoon.
But if I’m putting together a proper spread, you’ll usually find it beside:
- Warm pita bread
- Pita chips
- Fresh cucumber
- Celery
- Raw veggies
- Kalamata olives
- Crackers
- Crusty bread
- Grilled chicken
- Souvlaki
- Roasted potatoes
- Stuffed grape leaves
- Zucchini fritters
It also makes an incredible sauce for grilled meats or spread inside sandwiches.

Make Ahead & Storage
One of my favourite things about this recipe is that it’s even better after sitting for a few hours.
The flavors have time to come together, making the dip even more delicious.
Store leftovers in an airtight jar or container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Before serving, let it sit on the counter for about 15 minutes, then give it a quick stir and finish with another drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, fresh parsley, and a few extra red pepper flakes.
If you love this whipped feta dip, you should absolutely try making homemade tzatziki next.
Tzatziki is another classic Greek favourite made with Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and herbs. While Tirokafteri brings bold heat and smoky flavour, tzatziki is cool, creamy, and refreshing. I almost always serve both together on a mezze platter because they complement each other perfectly. If you’re planning a Greek-inspired dinner, having both dips on the table gives everyone something to love.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tirokafteri made of?
Traditional tirokafteri is made with feta cheese, roasted red peppers, garlic, red wine vinegar, olive oil, and fresh or dried chili peppers. Everything is blended together until smooth to create a creamy, spicy feta dip.
Is Tirokafteri very spicy?
Not necessarily.
You control the heat by adjusting the fresh chili and chili flakes. If you love spice, add more. If you prefer it mild, simply reduce the amount.
Is this gluten free?
The dip itself is naturally gluten free. Just pair it with gluten-free crackers or fresh vegetables instead of pita if needed.
Can I make it ahead?
Absolutely.
In fact, I think it tastes even better after a few hours in the fridge.

Why You’ll Keep Coming Back to This Dip
Some recipes become staples because they’re easy.
Others because they’re impressive.
This tirokafteri recipe manages to be both.
It’s bold, creamy, packed with flavour, and comes together in minutes using ingredients I almost always have on hand. Whether you’re putting together a mezze platter, serving friends for drinks, or simply looking for a new appetizer to enjoy with warm pita, this whipped spicy feta dip never disappoints.
Once you make it at home, I have a feeling it’ll become one of your favourite Greek dips, too.
