Farmers Market Haul: What’s Worth Buying
If you’ve ever wandered through the Santa Monica Farmers Market, you already know it’s much more than a place to buy groceries. It’s part inspiration, part treasure hunt, and one of my absolute favorite places to spend a morning. I’d even argue it’s one of the best farmers markets in the United States. Every visit feels different because the selection changes with the seasons, and even the same fruit or vegetable can come in half a dozen varieties. That’s one of the things I love most. You aren’t just buying tomatoes or peaches—you get to discover new shapes, colours, flavours, and varieties that you rarely see at the grocery store. This week’s farmers market haul was packed with some of my favourite summer ingredients, and I can’t wait to turn them into recipes I’ll be sharing here soon.
So consider this your sneak peek.
Why I Love Shopping at the Farmers Market
Shopping at a farmers market slows me down in the best possible way. And there’s nothing quite like a good farmers market haul to get you inspired about cooking.
Instead of walking in with a rigid grocery list, I like seeing what’s in season and letting the produce inspire what I cook that week.
When everything is harvested at its peak, the ingredients don’t need much help. A perfectly ripe tomato, fresh basil, good olive oil, and a pinch of flaky salt can become lunch.
That’s the beauty of farm fresh produce.
It encourages simple cooking. Everything is full of flavor and tastes fresh and delicious.

Farmers Market Haul: The Produce That Caught My Eye
Tomatoes
Summer tomatoes are one of the biggest reasons I visit farmers markets.
Whether they’re destined for salads, sandwiches, pasta, or simply sliced with basil and olive oil, nothing compares to a tomato picked at peak ripeness. That’s the beauty of a good farmers market haul.
Eggplant
During a farmers market haul, I always come home with at least one beautiful eggplant.
Roasted, grilled, or tucked into pasta, it’s one of the most versatile vegetables of the season.
Peppers
Sweet peppers add colour and crunch to almost everything.
I love roasting them, tossing them into salads, or chopping them into grain bowls for extra flavour.
Cucumbers
One thing I appreciate about the Santa Monica Farmers Market is the incredible variety of cucumbers.
Some are tiny and crisp. Others are long, thin, or beautifully curved.
Every variety brings a slightly different texture, making even a simple cucumber salad feel interesting.
Watermelon
Nothing says summer quite like watermelon.
I love serving it on its own, adding it to salads, or pairing it with herbs and a drizzle of honey for an easy dessert.
Zucchini
I can never resist fresh zucchini.
Grilled, roasted, shaved into salads, or baked into quick breads, it’s one of those vegetables I know I’ll use before the week is over.
Stone Fruit
The cherries and peaches were impossible to walk past.
Juicy, sweet, and perfectly ripe, they’re delicious on their own but also incredible baked, folded into desserts, or served with a little butter on grilled bread.

My Best Farmers Market Tip
Bring reusable bags.
It sounds simple, but you’ll almost always leave with more than you planned
A sturdy tote bag makes carrying your farmers market haul much easier, especially when you can’t resist “just one more basket” of peaches or tomatoes.
Farmers Market Haul: Start with the Basics, Then Get Curious
One of my favourite things about shopping at the Santa Monica Farmers Market is that you can grab all your weekly basics while also discovering something new.
Maybe it’s an unfamiliar variety of pepper, a unique melon, or herbs you’ve never cooked with before.
That’s where the fun begins.
Some of my favourite recipes from farmers market hauls have started because I picked up an ingredient simply out of curiosity.

Farmers Market Haul Recipes Coming Soon
Everything in this farmers market haul is headed somewhere delicious.
The tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, peppers, watermelon, zucchini, cherries, peaches, and eggplant will all be making appearances in upcoming recipes over the next few weeks.
So if you’re looking for easy ways to cook with seasonal produce, you’re in the right place.
Trust me—you’ll want to stick around.
If your market bags are overflowing with vegetables, one of my favourite ways to use them is a simple baked vegetable medley.
Roasting brings out the natural sweetness in vegetables while concentrating their flavour, making it an easy side dish that works with almost any meal.

Farmers Market Haul: Frequently Asked Questions
What should I buy at a farmers market?
Start with produce that’s in season. Tomatoes, peaches, herbs, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, cherries, and eggplant are all fantastic summer choices.
Should I bring reusable bags?
Yes. They’re sturdier, easier to carry, and you’ll almost certainly leave with more produce than you planned.
Is farm fresh produce really different?
In my experience, absolutely. Produce harvested closer to peak ripeness often has noticeably better flavour and texture.
How do I know what’s in season?
Talk to the farmers. They’re one of the best resources at the market and are always happy to tell you what’s tasting its best.
