Salmon Salad Recipe That Makes Lunch Easy
There are certain recipes that become part of your weekly routine. You don’t make them because they’re trendy or complicated. You make them because they make life easier and taste delicious, too. That’s exactly what this canned salmon salad recipe has become for me.
Growing up, my mom always preferred salmon over tuna, so salmon salad sandwiches were a regular part of our lunches. It wasn’t fancy, but it was satisfying, packed with protein, and always tasted even better the next day.
Over the years, I’ve given her classic version a little upgrade.
Fresh dill. Chives. Crunchy celery and radish. Bright lemon zest and juice. Dijon mustard. Everything Bagel seasoning.
The result is a salmon salad that feels lighter, fresher, and loaded with flavor while still being incredibly practical.
Most days you’ll find me piling it into crisp butter lettuce leaves for easy lettuce wraps, but it’s equally delicious on toasted bread, crackers, cucumber slices, or—straight from the bowl with a spoon.
I also love that it completely takes the guesswork out of lunch.
When I have a batch waiting in the fridge, I’m far less likely to reach for something less satisfying. I know I’ve already got a healthy, protein-packed meal waiting for me.
That’s exactly the kind of recipe I want in my refrigerator all summer long.

Salmon Salad Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 120 gr cans boneless, skinless wild salmon, drained
- 2 celery ribs, finely diced
- 2 radishes, finely diced
- 3 tbsp red onion, finely diced
- 3 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
- 3 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
- zest of 1 lemon
- juice of ½ lemon
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tsp Everything Bagel seasoning, plus more for garnish
- 1 head butter lettuce, leaves separated
- salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Drain the canned salmon well and transfer it to a large bowl.
- Use a fork to gently flake the salmon into bite-sized pieces.
- Add the diced celery, radishes, red onion, fresh dill, and fresh chives to the bowl with the salmon.
- Add the lemon zest, fresh lemon juice, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, and Everything Bagel seasoning.
- Gently fold everything together until the salmon is evenly coated and all of the ingredients are well combined.
- Be careful not to over mix—you want to keep some texture in the salmon.
- Taste and season with salt and freshly cracked black pepper as needed. Depending on the saltiness of your canned salmon and Everything Bagel seasoning, you may not need much additional salt.
- For the best flavor, cover and refrigerate the salmon salad for 20–30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. This step is optional.
- Spoon the salmon salad into crisp butter lettuce leaves for fresh lettuce wraps, or serve it on toasted bread, crackers, cucumber slices, or in a sandwich.
- Garnish with an extra sprinkle of Everything Bagel seasoning, a little more fresh dill, and a crack of black pepper before serving.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Stir before serving.

Why This Salmon Salad Recipe Works
There are lots of salmon salad recipes, but I think this one stands out because every ingredient has a purpose.
The canned wild salmon provides plenty of protein and a rich, satisfying texture.
Crunchy celery and radishes add freshness.
Fresh dill and chives brighten every bite.
Lemon zest and lemon juice wake everything up.
Dijon mustard adds depth.
The mayonnaise gives the salad just the right amount of creaminess without making it feel heavy.
Finally, Everything Bagel seasoning adds little pops of garlic, onion, sesame, and crunch that make people stop after the first bite and ask,
“What did you put in this?”
Sometimes the smallest ingredient ends up being the secret.

Salmon Salad Recipe Notes
This is one of those recipes I make almost without thinking.
If I know the week is going to be busy, I’ll mix up a batch on Sunday afternoon and tuck it into the refrigerator.
Lunch is solved.
I don’t have to wonder what I’m going to eat.
I don’t end up grabbing something because it’s convenient.
Instead, I have something I genuinely look forward to.
I personally love using boneless, skinless wild salmon because I prefer both the taste and texture, but honestly, use whatever canned salmon you enjoy most.
This canned salmon salad recipe isn’t about perfection.
It’s about making healthy eating feel effortless.
And that’s exactly the kind of cooking I love.

Ingredient Tips That Make a Difference In This Salmon Salad Recipe
Choose Good Canned Salmon
Good-quality canned salmon makes all the difference.
I usually reach for boneless, skinless wild salmon because it’s mild and flaky, but any canned salmon will work.
If you’re cooking salmon or have leftover salmon fillets, those work beautifully too.
Simply flake them with a fork before mixing everything together.
Fresh Herbs Matter
Fresh dill completely changes this recipe.
Combined with chives, it gives the salad that bright, summery flavor that dried herbs simply can’t replicate.
If you have green onions, they also make a wonderful addition.
Lemon Makes Everything Better
Don’t skip the lemon zest.
It adds even more citrus flavor than the juice alone and keeps the salad tasting incredibly fresh.
The Creamy Base
I use mayonnaise because I love the richness and creaminess it provides.
If you prefer, you can replace part of the mayo with Greek yogurt for a lighter version while still keeping plenty of flavor.

My Favorite Ways to Serve This Salmon Salad Recipe
One of the reasons I make this canned salmon salad recipe so often is because it never gets boring.
Some of my favorite ways to enjoy it include:
- Butter lettuce wraps
- Toasted sourdough
- Homemade sandwich bread
- Crackers
- Cucumber slices
- Stuffed avocados
- Spooned over sliced tomatoes
- Wrapped inside a tortilla
- With a side of fresh veggies
It’s also fantastic as a quick salmon salad sandwich when you need something a little more filling.

Salmon Salad Recipe: Meal Prep & Storage
This salmon salad recipe was practically made for meal prep.
Store it in an airtight container in the fridge, and you’ll have lunch ready for the next few days.
I actually think the flavors improve after sitting overnight because the lemon, herbs, and seasoning have time to come together.
Just give it a quick stir before serving.
If you plan to use it for lettuce wraps, keep the lettuce separate until you’re ready to eat so it stays crisp.

Make It Your Own
This recipe is incredibly flexible.
Try adding:
- Finely diced cucumbers
- Bell peppers
- Shallot
- Green onions
- Chopped hard-boiled eggs
- Fresh vegetables
- A drizzle of olive oil
- A splash of your favorite vinaigrette
Looking for something heartier?
Pile it onto toasted bread with sliced tomatoes and avocado for one of my favorite sandwiches.
While I love serving this salmon salad in lettuce wraps, homemade sandwich bread makes it feel like a completely different meal.
Soft, fresh bread paired with creamy salmon salad, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomatoes is one of those simple lunches that never gets old.

Wondering, is it 2 stalks of celery or two ribs? Two stalks seem like a lot?
2 ribs! Thanks for the catch, Cathy!
