Beef and Broccoli
I’ve been wanting to do this one for a while, folks. This is such a classic take-out order. No two Beef and Broccoli are ever the same, and everyone has a favourite restaurant that makes it right; now you can do it at home! The kids might be suspicious of the broccoli, but they won’t want to eat anything else once they taste the sauce and a bite of the tender beef! Let’s get cooking!
A bit of the history!
Chinese immigrants brought this super classic dish to North America many years ago, originally containing more traditional ingredients. Access to many of their cultural produce wasn’t possible, so they looked at similar varieties of vegetables, and thus, broccoli was added. It’s important for us to know the history behind the dishes so that we can appreciate the entirety of what we’re making, eating and sharing!
Key Ingredients for this Beef and Broccoli.
It’s a quick and easy recipe but with a few key ingredients.
Beef- The beef you use matters. Talk to your butcher and see what they have! An excellent, fresh cut of flank steak is a great choice.
Corn starch- This is what gives the sauce its signature body. Without it, it just isn’t beef and broccoli.
Beef broth- This is going to give your sauce extra body, beefy flavour and structure.
Soy– We used a less sodium style with the same great flavour but with a touch less sodium.
Broccoli- The stock is so tender and flavourful; keep it off.
Tips on nailing this Classic Beef and Broccoli.
It’s an easy one-pan dinner, but with a few key steps, you’ll need to make sure it’s perfect every time.
Get it all ready: Take the time to have all of your ingredients and sauces ready. Once the pan is hot, you won’t want to waste a second.
Big pan, small beef- ideally: You’d want to make this in a wok, but we might need access to one. So get your most giant pan and get it ripping. The more you put in your pan, the longer it will take and the less flavour you’ll build.
Watch the sauce: When you’re ready to add your sauce, don’t walk away. It’s going to reduce quickly. When it clings to everything and isn’t runny, you’re ready to go!

Very easy and turned out delicious. I used what I had on hand, which was bok choy and snap peas instead of broccoli, and I left out the ginger because I didn’t have any. Nice and saucy. Will make again!
