There are some recipes that feel a little too good to be true, and this black cherry vanilla ice cream is absolutely one of them.

Every summer I find myself buying way too much fruit at the farmers’ market. I always have big plans for those baskets of gorgeous seasonal produce, but somehow a few days later I’m staring at a pile of ripe fruit wondering what happened. That’s exactly why I love recipes like this one.

This homemade black cherry ice cream is rich, creamy, packed with juicy cherries, and unbelievably simple to make. No complicated techniques. No cooking custards. And no fancy equipment required.

Just a handful of ingredients, a little mixing, and a few hours in the freezer.

The first time I made it, I honestly couldn’t believe how good it was. The texture is creamy and scoopable, the cherry flavor shines through, and every bite tastes like summer.

Even better? Once you learn the technique, you can swap in almost any seasonal fruit and create endless variations.

Why This Easy Ice Cream Recipe Works

Traditional ice cream recipes often rely on custards made with eggs and yolks before being churned in an ice cream maker.

This recipe takes a completely different approach.

The whipped cream creates air and structure, while the sweetened condensed milk adds sweetness and prevents the mixture from freezing into a solid block of ice.

The result is a rich and creamy cherry vanilla ice cream that feels decadent without requiring specialized equipment.

That’s why I come back to this easy ice cream recipe every summer.

It’s approachable, reliable, and perfect for home cooks who want homemade ice cream without the fuss.

The Secret to Creamy Homemade Ice Cream

If you’ve never made a no-churn ice cream before, here’s the most important tip: don’t rush the whipped cream.

When whipping the cream, you’re creating the structure that gives this ice cream its light texture.

You want a stiff cream that holds its shape.

When it’s time to combine everything, gently fold the mixture together rather than aggressively stirring. If you force all that air out, you’ll lose some of the creamy texture that makes this recipe so special.

Think gentle folds, not vigorous mixing.

Why Black Cherries Are Perfect Here

I love using black cherries because they bring incredible sweetness and depth of flavor.

Their rich color also creates those beautiful ruby swirls throughout the ice cream.

When preparing the cherries, don’t throw away any of the juices. Those juices become part of the mixture and help distribute cherry flavor throughout every scoop.

Fresh cherries are my first choice during peak season, but frozen cherries work beautifully when summer is over.

This is one of those homemade cherry ice cream recipe situations where flexibility is your friend.

Fresh cherries make every scoop taste like summer.

Tips for Success

Preserve Every Drop of Juice

When dicing the cherries, save every bit of liquid.

That natural cherry juice acts almost like a syrup and helps carry the fruit flavor throughout the ice cream.

Fold Gently

The whipped cream contains thousands of tiny air bubbles.

When combining the mixture, use a rubber spatula and fold carefully to preserve that structure.

Freeze in the Right Container

A loaf pan works perfectly, but any freezer-safe container will do.

Just make sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap to prevent freezer burn.

Don’t Skip the Vanilla

The vanilla doesn’t overpower the cherries.

Instead, it rounds out the flavors and creates that classic cherry vanilla ice cream taste everyone loves.

If you’re feeling adventurous, a tiny splash of almond extract can also pair beautifully with cherries.

The hardest part? Waiting for it to freeze.

Cherry Ice Cream Variations

One of my favorite things about this recipe is how adaptable it is.

The base technique stays the same, but you can switch up the fruit depending on what’s in season.

Some fun cherry ice cream variations include:

  • Adding chocolate chunks
  • Swirling in cherry syrup
  • Mixing in toasted almonds
  • Using mixed berries
  • Combining cherries and peaches

Once you understand the method, the possibilities are endless.

No Ice Cream Maker? No Problem

One question I get all the time is whether an ice cream maker is necessary.

For this recipe, absolutely not.

That’s part of what makes it so appealing.

Many traditional ice cream recipes require you to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for an ice cream maker and then churn the mixture for 20 to 30 minutes.

Here, the whipped cream does most of the work for you.

No machine. No churn. And no stress.

Homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches

If scooping this ice cream into waffle cones isn’t your thing, try making homemade ice cream sandwiches.

A thick scoop of this black cherry ice cream pressed between two soft cookies is pretty hard to beat.

I love using chewy chocolate chip cookies, but sugar cookies or oatmeal cookies work beautifully too.

It’s a great way to turn this cherry ice cream into an unforgettable summer dessert.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does homemade cherry ice cream last?

Stored properly in a covered freezer-safe container, it will keep for up to two weeks.

A Summer Dessert Worth Making

There are plenty of impressive desserts out there, but sometimes the simplest ones are the most memorable.

This is one of the best cherry ice cream recipes around. It’s creamy, fruity, and incredibly easy to pull together. Whether you’re serving it in waffle cones, scooping it into bowls, or sandwiching it between cookies, it’s the kind of recipe that makes summer feel a little sweeter.

Irla says:

Instead of chocolate chunks , can I use chocolate syrup? I personally don’t like chocolate chunks in my ice cream. (in cookies it’s ok) Thank you. I’m anxious to try this recipe. I’m definitely going to try making it using either peaches or mango. 😋😋

Andy Hay says:

You can totally make this your own, Irla!

Adrianne S says:

I’ve made the plain version of this ice cream recipe several times. It is the easiest and best tasting ice cream I’ve ever made and I’ve tried many. My favorite way right now is to add 2-3 frozen bananas that I’ve partially thawed. This is a blue-ribbon ice cream recipe!

Andy Hay says:

Love this so much, Adrianne! The banana sounds awesome!

Barb says:

Can this be made with a Ninja Creami?

Andy Hay says:

I haven’t tested this one in a Ninja Creami, and since the Creami uses a different process, I can’t say for sure how this exact recipe would turn out. I’d recommend following a Creami-specific vanilla base and adding the cherries as a mix-in, Barb!

Nan Beaton says:

Made this ice cream and definitely 10/10. So creamy and smooth…people liked it better than store bought. And so easy to make. I would love to make it in a coffee flavour but not sure how to incorporate coffee into it! Any suggestions Andy?

Andy Hay says:

So happy to hear that! For a coffee version, dissolve 1–2 tablespoons of instant espresso powder in 1 tablespoon of hot water, let it cool, then mix it into the ice cream base before freezing. You can adjust the amount to make it as bold as you like!

Liz says:

Amazing! Made with strawberries!

Andy Hay says:

Great swap, Liz!
